Apple Inc. has recently urged its shareholders to vote against a proposal that seeks to eliminate the company’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs, as detailed in a proxy filing submitted by the company. This proposal was introduced by the National Center for Public Policy, a conservative think tank known for advocating positions that align with limited government intervention in corporate affairs.
The proposal calls for Apple to consider abolishing its “Inclusion & Diversity program, policies, department, and goals,” asserting that such initiatives pose potential “litigation, reputational, and financial risks” to the company. The proponents of this measure leverage recent Supreme Court rulings to argue that DEI initiatives could expose companies like Apple to an increased likelihood of lawsuits and other legal challenges.
In response, Apple emphasized the robustness of its existing compliance program, arguing that the proposal lacks merit and is unnecessary. The company contended that such a shareholder initiative represents an inappropriate attempt to micromanage its business strategy and hinders its commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive workplace. Apple has consistently maintained that its DEI programs are integral to its corporate values and overall success, reflecting its commitment to a progressive and equitable work environment.
