A fashion advertisement by Next has been banned due to concerns over a model’s appearance, which was deemed “unhealthily thin” and described as an “irresponsible image.” The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) raised objections to the posing and camera angle used in the advertisement.
In its assessment, the ASA compared this advert to other images of the model and noted that she appeared healthy in those photos. Next contested the ASA’s decision, asserting that the model, though thin, possessed a “healthy and toned physique.” The company mentioned that the image was taken nearly two years ago and was created with a “strong sense of responsibility.”
Next also stated that a stylist and product image manager from the company met with the model in person and reported no health concerns. The ASA’s ruling noted that the model’s face “did not appear to be gaunt” and that her arms, while slim, “did not display any protruding bones.”
