Wayne Rooney, the former Manchester United forward and the club’s all-time leading goalscorer has expressed deep concern about the current state of the team, describing them as “lost” and “scared” on the pitch. In a candid discussion on the Stick to Football podcast, Rooney pointed out the alarming performance of the team, which is currently struggling in 14th place in the Premier League.
With only nine wins out of 28 games this season, their trajectory appears troubling, especially considering they have managed to secure just five victories in the last 17 league matches since Ruben Amorim took over the managerial role following the dismissal of Erik ten Hag. During this challenging period, the team has suffered eight defeats, raising questions about their tactical approach and morale.
Rooney emphasized that, based on their recent performances, he sees little hope for recovery with the current squad, stating, “No, I don’t think so. They look lost. I think they look scared and just scared to make a mistake.” He acknowledged Bruno Fernandes as a standout player who consistently delivers on the pitch, despite sometimes being frustrated with his decisions.
However, Rooney insists that significant changes are necessary for the club to regain its competitive edge. He believes that a substantial overhaul is needed, stating that “10 to 15 players need to leave the club” in order to rebuild and restore Manchester United to its former glory.
