More than 25 individuals were apprehended following a violent attack on a convoy of United Nations peacekeepers in southern Lebanon, which left two people injured, including a high-ranking military commander.
Lebanese Interior Minister Ahmad al-Hajjar informed reporters after an emergency security meeting held on Saturday that “more than 25 individuals have been arrested by Lebanese army intelligence units.” He added that another individual was detained by security services, indicating a broad and swift response to the incident.
“It is important to clarify that the arrests do not necessarily imply that these detainees orchestrated the attack; the ongoing investigations will ultimately determine who bears responsibility,” he emphasized during the briefing.
The convoy, part of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), was targeted on Friday night while transporting Major-General Chok Bahadur Dhakal to the airport as he was preparing to depart for Nepal after successfully completing his peacekeeping mission. The situation escalated as protesters blocked the route, showcasing the heightened tensions in the region.
